Chapter 13
Not one light was on downstairs, and the only reason why Sosa was capable of seeing was from the upstairs hallway light shining down the steps. That’s all the light Sosa really needed considering her reasons for sitting in the dark, on the floor and in the corner of the living room. She jammed herself between the love sofa and the wall.
“Damn!’’ she whispered, rubbing her numb legs.
She had been sitting back there for hours, thinking that her threats to Paulette would make her come back and try to eliminate her from the equation completely. Sosa knew Jamaican’s well enough to know how arrogant and cocky they were, especially Ox’s family who believed they needed to be in control of every situation, and Sosa banked on Paulette feeling the same way.
“She’s not coming back” Sosa sulked ready to get up and stretch her legs.
As soon as she was about to get up a clicking noise came from the direction of the basement. It was so quiet in the house Sosa could hear very light footsteps coming up the basement stairs. For a second, she couldn’t believe Paulette actually came back but she was grateful and anxious to greet her.
“Bring that ass on’’ Sosa whispered to herself looking into the dining room where the basement door was.
At first it was just a shadow but then, as they came closer, Sosa could see that it was a man. He was tall and black with a large gun in his hand. Sosa’s heart started racing at the sight of him and knew that he was there to kill her and probably anyone who was in the house.
He slowly crept to the bottom of the steps, and for the first time Sosa could see his face. She didn’t know who Patrick was but by the looks of his dreads draping down over his shoulders, she knew that he was Jamaican. He stood at the bottom of the steps looking up and listening for any sounds of movement.
Sosa tried to get up but her legs had completely gone to sleep on her, making it difficult to move. She was only about 12 feet away from him but couldn’t move. It was frustrating but Sosa wasn’t going to let her chance miss her. She raised the Glock .40 and turned the infrared beam on, aiming it to the back of his head. He was about to go up the steps but Sosa stopped him.
“Take another step and I’ma open the back of ya head up” Sosa threatened.
Patrick froze. He knew the voice was coming from behind him but he didn’t know from where. He was sure he didn’t see anybody when he emerged from the basement, but even he was capable of slipping.
“Drop the gun” Sosa demanded as she slowly began to come from behind the loveseat.
Patrick didn’t do it. He only gripped his gun tighter, and was two seconds away from turning around and letting it fly. He didn’t comply so Sosa aimed the beam down at his hand.
